The coronavirus that ravaged millions around the world seems to be resurfacing in portions of Asia. Hong Kong and Singapore are witnessing a concerning increase in new cases, putting health officials on high alert. While indications of a new wave arise, citizens are advised to be cautious. Both countries are keeping a close watch so that they do not face another public health emergency.
Hong Kong Confronts Fresh Threat
Hong Kong registered a concerning surge in COVID-19 cases, and indications are that a wave of infections is on the rise. Virus activity in the city is currently at its greatest level in a year, according to Albert Au, who heads the Communicable Diseases Branch at the Health Protection Centre. There were thirty-one positive cases during the week up to May 3, a sharp jump from the previous weeks. This surge has raised serious concern among health authorities in the city.
The case has also affected public events. Eason Chan, a popular Hong Kong singer, has gone on to test positive for COVID-19, causing his upcoming concert in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, to be canceled. The cancellation was made through the concert’s official Weibo account. The unexpected turn of events is a show of the severity of the current spread.
Singapore Issues High Alert
Singapore has reacted to the increase in infections by calling a high alert. The Ministry of Health released its first infection update in almost a year, a sign of the increasing urgency. For the week ending May 3, the COVID-19 cases increased by 28 percent to 14,200 cases. Hospitalisations also rose sharply. A 30 percent increase in hospital patients has been registered, along with a 10 percent rise in severe cases.
These numbers indicate that the virus is once more exerting pressure on health systems. The Ministry requested that people be careful and observe precautions to minimize the spread.
Unusual Seasonal Shift Raises Alarm
Mostly, coronavirus cases have a habit of spiking in the winter. But this fresh surge is occurring now in the summer season, which is shocking health officials. The virus seems to be spreading despite seasonal variations, increasing the possibility of wider spread across the region. Since the virus is still active even in the summer season, authorities are asking people not to take chances and take proper precautions.
