Central government employees are eagerly waiting for a Diwali gift from the government. Reports suggest that the Modi government may increase dearness allowance (DA) by 3%. This means employees could receive 58% DA instead of the current 55%. Around 10 million employees and pensioners will benefit from this decision. Media reports claim that the announcement could come before Diwali, though the exact date is not confirmed.

Current DA Status

At present, central employees are getting 55% DA. The government has been giving regular increments in DA according to the 7th Pay Commission. If the increase is announced, DA will rise to 58%. The previous 2% hike was implemented from January 1, 2025. Now, employees are expecting another revision from July 1, 2025.

Expected Increase in Salary

If DA increases by 3%, it will directly raise the salary of central employees. For instance, if an employee earns Rs 40,000 per month, then an additional 3% will add Rs 1,200 to their monthly salary. This means an extra Rs 14,400 in a year. Similarly, an employee earning Rs 30,000 will get Rs 900 more every month, which becomes Rs 10,800 annually.

Beneficiaries of DA Hike

Almost 10 million employees and pensioners of the central government will be covered under this hike. For employees, this increase will give them extra monthly relief. For pensioners, the increment will reflect in their pensions as well. This is why the DA hike is being called a booster dose for both categories.

Impact on Festive Season

Since the announcement is expected before Diwali, this increase will work as an extra benefit for families during the festive season. The government is likely to use this move to ease the financial pressure of employees and pensioners, especially when inflation is already a concern.

8th Pay Commission Update

There is also discussion about the 8th Pay Commission. Reports suggest that the government may announce its formation in October 2025. However, no official statement has been made yet. If formed, the 8th Pay Commission could be implemented by 2027. It will bring new pay scales, benefits, and allowances for employees.

Government Decision Awaited

As of now, the government has approved the proposal for a new Pay Commission but not yet constituted the committee. A formal announcement is awaited. Until then, the DA increase is the most immediate relief employees are expecting before Diwali.

What Employees Can Expect

If both DA hike and 8th Pay Commission plans move forward, central government employees will see major changes in their salary structure in coming years. For now, the DA hike to 58% is expected to be the next big step, which will give immediate financial support.
