England’s aggressive batsman Jonny Bairstow may join the Mumbai Indians if they qualify for the IPL playoffs. He is likely to replace Will Jacks, who has been selected in England’s squad for the white-ball series against the West Indies. Will Jacks is currently in India and will play the last two league matches of the season against Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings.
Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, are currently fourth on the IPL points table. The five-time champions have 14 points from 12 matches and must win both of their remaining games to secure a spot in the playoffs. If they qualify, Bairstow will be added to the team. The wicketkeeper-batsman went unsold in the IPL auction and has been playing county cricket recently.
Bairstow’s IPL Performance
Bairstow has played 50 IPL matches and scored 1,589 runs with a strike rate of 144.45. He played for Sunrisers Hyderabad last year and Punjab Kings in 2022 and 2024. While playing for Punjab, he scored a brilliant century at Eden Gardens last year, which led to a big loss for Kolkata at their home ground.
Jacques’ Role as an All-Rounder
Mumbai Indians have used Jacques well this season. He has played 11 matches, scoring 195 runs with a strike rate of 129.13 and taking five wickets. In his last match for Mumbai, Jacques scored a half-century against Gujarat, but the team still lost.
Asalanka May Join Mumbai Indians
Apart from Bairstow, Charith Asalanka is also expected to join the Mumbai Indians. Openers Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch will leave the team after the league stage and will not be available for the playoffs, if Mumbai qualifies. In this case, Asalanka can be brought in, as he can bat well in the middle overs.
