Sri Lankan spinners battling with Australian batsmen today

Dubai: When Sri Lanka and Australia face off in a Group 1 Super 12 clash in the ICC T20 World Cup on Thursday, former champions will try to take advantage of Australia’s top-order woes. Sri Lanka, which won the tournament in 2014, topped Group A with three consecutive wins before beating Bangladesh by five wickets in their first Super 12 match.

On the other hand, the Aussies, who are yet to win a T20 World Cup, faced a lot of difficulties in their first encounter. Captain Aaron Finch got a duck, while David Warner, who was going through a tough time, was once again cheaply dismissed and Mitchell Marsh also struggled. When facing clever lanky spinners, a solid start is half the battle won, and the two Australian powerhouses will need some classy hits.

On the other hand, the presence of talented spinners in the Sri Lankan team can create problems for the underperforming Australian hitters. The return of injured and missing out on the win against Bangladesh, Mahesh Tekshana, could boost the team’s confidence as he has the ability to trouble the Australian batsmen struggling against slow pitches. Leg-spinning all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga could be a headache for the opposing batting line-up, and his performance could affect the outcome of the match.

Sri Lanka Possible XI: Kusal Perera (wicketkeeper), Patham Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, Avishka Fernando, Bhanuka Rajapakse, Vanindu Hasaranga, Dasun Shanaka (captain), Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chamira, Mahesh Thikshana / Binura Kunandara, Lahi.

Australia Probable XI: David Warner, Aaron Finch (c), Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade (wk), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc/Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.
