Mushroom Pepper Fry: It is a popular South Indian dry dish known for its bold flavour, rich aroma and simple preparation. Made with fresh mushrooms, crushed black pepper, and aromatic spices, this dish is perfect as a starter, side dish, or even a quick snack. It pairs beautifully with chapati, dosa, appam, or steamed rice.
This recipe is loved by spice lovers because of its peppery heat and restaurant-style taste. The best part is that it can be prepared in less than 30 minutes using easily available ingredients.

Ingredients Required
- 200 grams button mushrooms
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 medium onion, finely sliced
- 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1–2 green chilies, slit
- 1 teaspoon crushed black pepper (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- Salt as required
- Few curry leaves
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
Step-by-Step Mushroom Pepper Fry Recipe
- First, clean the mushrooms thoroughly under running water and pat them dry. Slice them evenly and keep aside.
- Heat oil in a pan over medium flame. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter, then add cumin seeds and curry leaves, sautéing for a few seconds until aromatic.
- Add sliced onions and cook until they turn golden brown. Now add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Sauté until the raw smell disappears.
- Next, add turmeric powder, coriander powder, crushed black pepper and salt. Mix well and cook for a minute on low flame.
- Add the sliced mushrooms and mix gently so the spices coat them evenly. Cover the pan and cook for 5–7 minutes. Mushrooms release water, so cook until the moisture evaporates and the dish becomes dry.
- Open the lid, stir well, and sauté for another 2–3 minutes to get a slightly crispy texture.
- Turn off the flame and garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves. Serve hot.
Tips for Perfect Mushroom Pepper Fry
- Do not overcook mushrooms, as they become soft and watery.
- Use freshly crushed black pepper for authentic flavour.
- Cook on medium flame to avoid burning spices.
- You can add capsicum for extra crunch.
