Step-by-Step Matar Dal Recipe

Start by washing green peas thoroughly. If using fresh peas, lightly crush or coarsely grind them for better texture. Heat oil or ghee in a pressure cooker or pan. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown. Add ginger, garlic, and green chili, and cook until the raw smell disappears. Add tomatoes and cook until soft and oil starts separating.

Now add turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and add the crushed or whole green peas. Add water as required and cook until the peas are soft and the dal reaches a smooth consistency. If using a pressure cooker, cook for 2–3 whistles.
