Oscar winning actor Sidney Poitier dies, great personalities pay tribute


Mumbai. Hollywood veteran Sidney Poitier has died at the age of 94. Sidney Poitier was the first black actor to receive an Oscar for Best Actor. He inspired a generation during the civil rights movement. Let us tell you that in the 50s and 60s, when there was tension in America regarding racism, at that time Sidney Poitier did projects challenging bigotry and conservatism. These include ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’ in 1967 and ‘In the Heat of the Night’.


Let us tell you that fans including well-known personalities are expressing grief over the death of Sidney Poitier. Former US President Barack Obama expressed his condolences by tweeting. He wrote- ‘Sidney Poitier, rich in his powerful roles and prodigious talent, reveals the power of cinema to bring us together. He opened doors to a generation of actors. Michelle and I send love to her family and fans.’

American TV host Oprah Winfrey shared a picture with Sidney Poitier and wrote, ‘To me, the biggest of the great trees has fallen: Sidney Poitier. It’s an honor to love him as a mentor. A friend, a brother, a confident, intelligent teacher.’
