The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a major weather update, warning of heavy rainfall and snowfall in several regions over the next 48 hours. This alert covers nine states where intense weather activity is expected due to active western disturbances and low-pressure systems. Residents are advised to stay cautious and follow local administration advisories closely.

Heavy Rain in North and Northeast States

The IMD has reported that heavy to very heavy rainfall will affect many parts of the north and northeast region. States including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Sikkim are likely to experience continuous downpours. The weather department also indicated the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning in these areas. Local authorities have been asked to stay alert for potential landslides and flash floods.

Snowfall in Hill Regions

According to IMD, snowfall has been predicted in higher altitude regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The intensity of snowfall is likely to increase during the night hours. This will impact road connectivity in hilly areas, especially at mountain passes. Tourists planning to visit these regions are advised to check travel updates before departure as several routes may face temporary closures.

Temperature Drop in Northern India

The fresh spell of rain and snowfall will bring a sharp drop in temperatures across northern plains. Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh are likely to see a dip of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. Morning and evening conditions are expected to remain cold and cloudy. The IMD suggests that fog formation may intensify in the early morning hours in these regions.

Alert in Central and Eastern States

Apart from the northern region, some eastern and central states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha are also under a rainfall alert. Moderate showers accompanied by gusty winds are expected in many districts. Farmers are advised to take preventive measures for standing crops, as continuous rain may affect harvest and transport operations in these states.

Impact on Daily Life and Transport

Due to the ongoing weather conditions, several trains and flights might be delayed or rescheduled. Road traffic is also likely to be affected in areas experiencing heavy downpour or snowfall. Commuters are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during this period. The IMD has also recommended following real-time updates through official channels to stay informed.

Precautionary Measures Suggested

The IMD has urged people to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or electric poles. Those living near riverbanks or hilly slopes should stay vigilant for landslide warnings. Local disaster management teams have been kept on standby to respond quickly in case of emergencies.

Forecast for Coming Days

The current spell of rain and snow is expected to continue till the next 48 hours, after which gradual improvement is likely. However, another system may approach from the Bay of Bengal later this week, which could bring fresh rainfall in eastern India. The IMD will continue to monitor the situation and issue further updates.
