Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga like this happened manifest : mythical story
The delightful city of Avanti was very dear to Lord Shiva. In this city lived a learned Brahmin named Veda Priya. Who was very intelligent and a knower of rituals. That Shiva devotee Brahmin used to worship him by making earthly Shivling every day. He was always engaged in learning the Vedas.

He had also received the full fruits of his deeds. On the other hand, a demon named Dushan, who had got the boon of Brahma ji, lived on the Ratnamal mountain. Due to this boon, the demon started stopping the Brahmins of Avanti Nagar from performing their religious rituals. He became very upset by this irreligious act of the demon. Then these brahmins started praying to Shiva Shankar for their protection.

Lord Shiva at first warned the demon with this modesty of the Brahmins, but this warning had no effect on him. One day these demons attacked the Brahmins. Then to save them from these demons, Lord Shiva tore the earth and appeared in the form of Mahakal and angry Shiva consumed the evil demon with one of his hooters.

Seeing this the Brahmin devotees were very pleased. And started requesting Lord Shiva to stay there. Being overwhelmed by the request of the Brahmins, Lord Shiva sat there. For this reason this place was named Mahakaleshwar, which is known as Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga.
