Geeta Dutt: The Skylark With A Checkered Life, Here Are His Top Songs

Today is the birthday of Bollywood’s famous film singer Geeta Dutt. She was the wife of one of the greatest filmmakers of Bollywood, Guru Dutt. However, his life was full of tragedy. She was always troubled by Guru Dutt’s inclination towards Waheeda Rehman.


All the great musicians of his time like S.D. His involvement with Burman, Hemant Kumar and Op Nayyar is well known. His real popularity is S.D. Burman’s songs. She came to public attention with her song ‘Mera Sundar Sapna Baat Gaya’. But Burman sang his other types of songs as well. Cabaret with pain-filled songs, the range of these songs reflects Burman’s confidence and Geeta Dutt’s skill to play at any level. Sartaj OP Nayyar gave Geeta Dutt some of her special songs. His songs were mostly filled with folk music and open voice. Hemant Kumar, himself a prolific singer, brought balance to the voice of the brilliant composer Geeta Dutt. The two worked together on many melodious Bengali songs. Geeta Dutt also worked with many other great musicians like Chitragupta, Bullo Si Rani, Hansraj Behl, Husnalal-Bhagatram, Madan Mohan, Anil Biswas, Roshan, Avinash Vyas, SN Tripathi and Vasant Desai. Geeta Dutt has also given some prized compositions to many lesser known musicians.

Film ‘Jeet’ (1949): Devanandanda and Suraiya were in lead roles. The song was sung by Geeta Dutt and composed by Shyam Babu.

Sipahasalar (1956) starred Shammi Kapoor and Nadira in the lead roles. The music of the film was given by Iqbal Qureshi and sung by Geeta Dutt.

The Ghazal was sung by Geeta Dutt and composed by Shailesh Kumar. The film was Savera (1958) starring Ashok Kumar and Meena Kumari.

The film Mr India released in 1961 had Geeta Bali, but the song sung by Geeta Dutt was filmed on Helen at a very young age. Lyrics by Jan Nisar Akhtar.

Geeta Dutt sang a beautiful ghazal for the film Bhool Na Jaana (1964). The music was composed by Dan Singh.
