Lucknow: After the announcement of the dates of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, the political turmoil in the state has intensified. Defection of MLAs is at its peak in the state. Meanwhile, Gajraj Singh, a four-time Congress MLA from Hapur assembly seat, met Jayant Chaudhary on Thursday and took over the reins of Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). Gajraj Singh’s decision is being seen as a big setback for the Congress.
Gajraj Singh had reached the assembly in 1985, 1989, 1993 and 2012 by winning from Hapur seat on Congress ticket. So far, he has contested elections on a Congress ticket about seven times. That is why his name is counted among the top leaders of the party in the state. Gajraj Singh had also contested the election in 2017 on a Congress ticket but lost this election.
The Congress on Thursday released the first list of 125 candidates for the UP assembly elections, which includes 50 women candidates, including the mother of the Unnao gang rape victim. Party’s national general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra released the first list of candidates through a digital press conference and specifically mentioned the names of 50 women candidates.
