Art of Living founder and Indian religious guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has now reacted to Bollywood film actress Alia Bhatt’s ‘Kanyadaan’ ad. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has endorsed Alia Bhatt’s ad. In an interview with Republic, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said that Kanya Daan has nothing to do. At the same time, he took a stand on Vedic practices. He also said that the tradition of ‘Kanyadaan’ should be abolished. He also mentioned the ancient Vedic practice of ‘Panigraha’.
In the same interview, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said that there is no mention of anything like kanyadan, especially in Shruti. After the smritis, this object is placed in the panigraha in which the hand is placed. Panigraha is a Vedic Sanskrit word. It involves holding hands, whether the husband holds the wife, or the wife holds the husband’s hand. Gender equality is very high in our Vedic cultural system. What happened over the ages is that many changes took place in it and then Kanyadaan was made a part of it. There is nothing to donate a girl child.
At the same time, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar also says that the idea and meaning behind this age-old tradition has been distorted over the years. According to the report, he explained that I would always like to call it Panigraha, where the father says, ‘You take care of my daughter.’ This is true, but it has been debunked as ‘charity’ somewhere in the Middle Ages. I would say that Kanyadaan should be removed. When you remove it, it will not in any way diminish our Vedic position or doctrine or philosophy.
