Elon Musk’s company will start broadband service in India, emphasis on rural areas

New Delhi: Starlink, the satellite broadband business division of Elon Musk-led company SpaceX, is set to launch broadband services in India. The company plans to launch it in December 2022. The company is currently awaiting government approval for two lakh active terminals. Sanjay Bhargava, India director at Starlink, said in a LinkedIn post that on the first day in office, the company has already received 5,000 pre-orders in India and is ready to provide broadband services in rural areas.

Bhargava further said that he aims to have two lakh terminals available in India by December 2022. He has said that if they do not get the approval of the government, the actual figure may be very low or even zero. But there is little hope that they will cross the two million mark. Starlink is taking a deposit of $99 or Rs 7,350 to be part of the priority list of customers. The pre-order deposit will be adjusted against the monthly fee once the service is activated. Customers can also make a refund, but by doing so they will also lose their priority status.

The company claims that it will speed up data in the beta phase in the range of 50 to 150 megabytes. The company will challenge Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea in the broadband segment and will compete directly with Bharti Group-backed OneWeb.
