Congress made Asha Singh, mother of Unnao rape victim, candidate, BJP MLA was punished in the case

New Delhi. Party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra announced the name of the 19-year-old victim’s mother while releasing the list of 125 Congress candidates. Congress has fielded Asha Singh, mother of 2017 Unnao rape case victim, as its candidate for next month’s assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. Priyanka Gandhi said that 40 percent tickets have been given to women. Former BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted for raping the girl and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi while welcoming the verdict said, “Whose daughter was wronged by BJP in Unnao, now she will become the face of justice – will fight, win. Priyanka Gandhi while announcing ticket to Unnao rape victim’s mother”. Said, “Our Unnao candidate is Asha Singh ji, the mother of the gangrape victim. She wants to contest elections. We have given them the opportunity, through which their husband was killed, daughter was raped, accident happened, take that power in their own hands.

The Unnao rape case came into limelight when the victim attempted suicide outside the residence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The victim had attempted suicide due to the alleged beating of her 55-year-old father by Sengar’s brother. The victim’s father died the next day due to injuries sustained by the beating. After this the demand for justice was raised across the country. In December 2019, Sengar was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in a separate case of raping a woman in Unnao in 2017. Congress has now been reduced to a small player in the politics of Uttar Pradesh. The party is now focusing on gender equality in view of the increasing crimes against women in the state. Due to this, Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi worked to put pressure on the government in the case of gang rape of a Dalit woman in Hathras and in the Unnao rape case.
