A great day for equity markets in India with the BSE benchmark Sensex closing above the 60,000 mark for the first time. After touching a record high of 60,333 before the close, the Sensex finally closed 163.11 points higher at 60,048.47. Similarly, the NSE benchmark Nifty closed 30.25 points higher at 17,853.20 after making an all-time high of 17,947.65.
IT, auto and realty stocks supported the benchmark. Nifty IT, the IT sub-index of the NSE, ended 0.76 per cent higher as record earnings from Accenture raised expectations of a strong Q2 show from Indian IT companies.
Asian Paints was the top gainer in Nifty stocks, followed by Eicher Motors and HCL Tech, rising up to 2.5 per cent. HDFC Bank, Bharti Airtel, Grasim, Infosys, ICICI Bank, HDFC, Wipro, SBI Life Insurance, Bajaj Auto, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Life were among the gainers in Nifty. Meanwhile, Tata Steel was the biggest loser in Nifty followed by JSW Steel and SBI falling up to 2.7 per cent. Divis Labs, Axis Bank, Shree Cements, ITC, Tata Consumer Products, NTPC, Bajaj Finance, Adani Ports, HUL were the other losers in Nifty. The broader markets also outperformed the benchmark indices today; The BSE Midcap index lost 1.16 per cent and the BSE Smallcap index lost 0.30 per cent.
