Air Force helicopter carrying General Bipin Rawat crashes, 5 killed

Mumbai. An Indian Air Force chopper on Wednesday crashed near Coonoor in the hilly Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu. The helicopter was carrying 14 people including Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) Bipin Rawat, his wife. According to the report, 5 people have died in the accident, while the condition of 2 others is critical. The bodies of those killed in the accident were badly burnt. Efforts are on to identify them.

Tamil Nadu Forest Minister K Ramachandran said after visiting the spot, “I have reached the spot on the instructions of the Chief Minister. 5 people have died, while the condition of 2 is critical. Relief and rescue work is going on. It is being told that the accident took place allegedly due to low visibility due to foggy conditions. The Air Force said that an inquiry has been ordered into the accident. The helicopter took off from Sulur Air Force Base near Coimbatore. TV footage showed flames rising in the helicopter after the accident. Rescue workers, along with army personnel, were seen clearing debris from the crash site.

In a tweet, the IAF said, “Mi-17V5 helicopter of the IAF crashed today near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu. Defense chief General Bipin Rawat was also aboard. An inquiry has been ordered into the accident. Defense sources said that 14 people were on board the helicopter that crashed. The helicopter was on its way from Sulur to Wellington when it caught fire near Kateri.
